Local Youths Transform Community Garden
Thanks to the valiant efforts of a group of local youths the garden at the Freebridge Community House in South Lynn has been transformed from an overgrown wilderness into a beautiful community garden within a week.
The project was part of The Prince's Trust Team Programme, run by the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service in King's Lynn which enables 16-25 year olds to develop their confidence, motivation and skills over a 12-week course. Young people from the King's Lynn and Wisbech area, took part in the programme which leads to a City & Guilds certificate in Personal, Teamwork and Community Skills, enabling successful students to move on to further education, training or employment.
Freebridge Community Housing works closely with The Prince's Trust and offered the Community House garden as a potential project. Students spent a week clearing the area, creating a lawn, flower beds, planting, and erecting new fencing and gates. The garden will now be taken over by the local Youth Club who will be carrying out further planting and are looking into the possibility of growing vegetables.
Robert Clarke, Assistant Director of Housing at Freebridge said; "It was great to see how a group of young people from the Prince's Trust tackled such a daunting project. As the garden improved, their enthusiasm heightened and at the end of the process they were really proud of what they had achieved from what was a very tired looking garden. When I visited on the last day of the project the garden certainly had the wow factor and I would like to thank all those concerned in organising and delivering such a worthwhile project. The garden can now be enjoyed and taken forward by the local community alongside making the best possible use of the Community House".
The South Lynn Community House is available to local groups and organisations for community activities. If your organisation would be interested in using the space available, please contact Ann-Marie Thompson 01553 667719.
