Hillington Square Community Centre
A new sign for the Hillington Square Community Centre will be unveiled on Saturday, 16 January at 1pm by Borough Mayor Cllr Michael Pitcher. The sign was designed as part of an art competition run by community artist Emma Markwell at the Hillington Square Fun Day held in September 2009. Workshops ran throughout the day and young people were asked to design something to make the community centre visually more appealin, and hopefully encourage more local residents to attend the events held there. The winners Jasmine Monk and Lauren Carson created the new sign together and will attend the unveiling to see work displayed. Emma Markwell, Community Artist who ran the competition, commented: "It was an enormously rewarding job working with the residents of Hillington Square. The art workshop was inundated with children and teenagers from the area throughout the day. Choosing the winners was an extremely difficult job because the quality of the artwork was very impressive, with many vibrant and original ideas. I think it is a great idea to involve young people in creating public artworks for all to see and admire. Young people have an exciting and fresh viewpoint and they can take pride in improving their neighbourhood." Borough Mayor Cllr Michael Pitcher said: "When we visited Hillington Square on the Fun Day last September we were impressed by the commitment of the residents to improving the community spirit. I am sure that creating an identity by designing this Community Centre sign enforces the pride these residents have in Hillington Square." The competition winners were also awarded art supplies, donated by Tesco, and will be taken on a tour of the Town Hall and have tea with the Mayor. Irene Gammon, Hillington Square Resident Association, added: "We are thrilled with the new sign; the design is great and it really brightens up the entrance to the Community Centre and makes it look much more welcoming. Congratulations to the lucky winners!" The new sign was funded by the Hillington Square Residents Association, Freebridge Community Housing and the St Margaret’s with St Nicholas Community Forum.
