Festive cheer at Freebridge Sheltered Schemes

An 11-year-old girl from North Lynn has helped bring some Christmas cheer to West Norfolk’s older residents.

Lilly Luker won a competition to design a Christmas card that’s been hand delivered to everyone living in Freebridge’s 700 sheltered accommodation homes.

Lilly was awarded her prize by Santa in a covid-friendly doorstep visit on Tuesday evening.

The cards, along with some carefully packaged mince pies from Freebridge’s Community Caterer, were delivered by Freebridge’s scheme advisors and the Placeshaping team.

One of the residents, at Sunnyside Close in Heacham, told us it had been a very difficult few months, and just seeing someone at her door was a bit overwhelming. She was so happy to see a face and the delivery had made her year.

Sophie Bates, Director of Housing at Freebridge said: “Loneliness is an issue that’s affected so many people this year, and we know that it has hit some of our older and more vulnerable residents particularly hard.

“We wanted to make sure that our residents know they are being thought of this Christmas, and giving them the chance to see a friendly face and have a socially distanced chat has been a real highlight”.

All the deliveries were carried out in a covid safe way, with employees wearing appropriate PPE.

Other projects that Freebridge is working on this winter to provide additional support to tenants and the wider community include:

  • making regular welfare telephone calls to tenants over the age of 60, including daily calls, and some home visits, to our more vulnerable tenants,
  • providing additional financial and welfare support,
  • providing additional advice and guidance to people who have become unemployed as a result of the knock-on effects of coronavirus – we have taken on a number of additional employees to help do this,
  • facilitating urgent temporary accommodation requests from partner organisations,
  • providing support to partner organisations in respect of the supply of food parcels for those in need
  • loaning out computer tablets to residents who don’t have access to technology, to use for video calls with friends and family.
