Electrical safety for sheds and outbuildings

As Freebridge do not provide customers with power to outbuildings and sheds, we’d like to share some key fire safety advice and requirements with you should you wish to do so.

It’s common to have electrical supplies and appliances running in your outbuildings and sheds, but vitally important that this is done safely.

With that in mind, please follow the below steps when it comes to powering up your outbuildings:

Professional installation

You should not attempt DIY electrical work, run extension leads from your home to the outbuilding, or use unapproved portable heaters.

When it comes to heaters, always verify that your heater carries the British Standard (BS) kitemark or a CE/UKCA mark

All wiring must be safely trenched, armoured (a Steel Wired Armoured cable must be used), and properly grounded.

Specialised equipment

Your garages and sheds are exposed to damp, dust, and temperature changes all year round.

That means that any sockets, switches, and light fixtures must have an appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating. This is usually IP55 or higher and will help prevent short circuits caused by moisture.

RCD protection

It’s important that your electrical supply is be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD). This acts as a fast-acting breaker to cut off power in the event of a fault or water ingress, drastically reducing fire and shock risks.

Safe storage and hazard management

Please remember that you should never store petrol, gas cylinders, or excessive flammable materials in an outbuilding with live electrics.
